Wanna Create a Wiki?

February 28, 2008

Well, as per usual Google makes a version and not surprisingly it is very intuitive and easy to use. Hmm, that sounded like an Apple-like pitch for a second. Maybe they should team up ... they would be unstoppable. Anyhoo, check it out for yourself. You can also visit Google Operating System for screenshots and a more thorough explanation of the technology. At the rate Google is going with all of these free and easy to use web apps, one would think that they are on the path to making an online operating system. Who wants to bet that they’ll announce one in the next 3~5 years?

Apple to Release SDK?

Well, they were supposed to release it this month but it seems as if the iPhone SDK is to be released sometime next month in March. Ah, this is quite exciting! Definitely be on the look out for PW Software iPhone apps.

iPhone is Taking Over the World

February 14, 2008

According to the Financial Times, Google has seen 50 times more searches from the iPhone than any other mobile device. Google’s head of operations Vic Gundotra didn’t believe it himself.

We thought it was a mistake and made our engineers check the logs again.

How’s that for success? In other [rumored] news, there is a lot of speculation as to what Apple’s next unveiling will be and insiders and anaylysts have marked February 26th as the date of the rumored unveiling(s). Some think it is a 3G iPhone, others say the MacBook line could be updated with the new Penryn processors and a multi-touch/gesture trackpad (the MacBook Air already has this). I personally hope it’s both. We’ll just have to wait and see!

Digsby - Manage Your Online Life

February 08, 2008

If you’re like me (and this will most likely be true), then you have multiple email accounts and a couple social networking sites that you log into regularly to check for messages, updates, and the like. Well, there’s an app out (still in beta) that attempts to combine them into one app and make it easy to use. For a beta, it’s pretty good! Here are a couple of screens of it:

digsby1.jpg

If you want to try it, you can click here to download it. Since the beta is by “invite-only”, you will need an invite code. Use the code uneasysilence and you should be able to log in and whatnot. BTW, the invite code is courtesy of the cool people at UneasySilence. Check them out, there are some interesting articles to read.

Get the PW Software Widget!

I actually found out about this week about a week ago but my wifi was acting up. But now I have it! Here’s what it looks like:

2249693049_3e739e5a11_o.png

I made it at this site called SpringWidgets. Not only can you share//view it on the Net, but you can download an app (under 3 MB) so that you can have it on your desktop. Pretty nifty. I also designed an iPhone-like badge button for it. I’ll make a downloads page one of these days so I can organize these things.

… And We’re Back! Again.

In case you haven’t noticed, PW Software was unreachable for a good part of last week and this week. The reason? Well, here’s what my host had on the front page of their website:

Dear GlobeDomain Clients,

At 12:31AM Titanium server suffered a drive failure on our primary SCSI drive. Upon failure we decided to replace all components of the server including the RAM, CPU, motherboard, and chassis. We also installed the very latest Operating System: RedHat/CentOS Enterprise Linux 5.0. This was done to avoid downtime for years down the road, as those upgrades will not have to be performed again for several years to come.

Rest assured our engineers are working as fast as possible to restore functionality to the servers. ETA is approximately 5 hours from now for full account restoration.

We are very sorry for the downtime and troubles this is causing for our clients, and we have been working through the night to get Titanium up and running again.

As a compensation to our clients, we will be giving any clients, on request, a free upgrade to the next higher plan, free of charge.

Again, we apologize for the issues today, and service should be restored shortly.

The current time is 11:21AM CST.

6:20PM CST Update: Account Restoration taking longer than we anticipated. ETA 4 hours.

6:40PM CST Update: Users a - b are restored

10:49PM CST Update: Users through d are restored

4:51AM CSt Update: Users through g are restored

10:00PM CSt Update: Users through n are restored

Due to the delay in restoring your accounts, accounts m - z will receive 2 free upgrades.

Best Regards,
GlobeDomain Team

Annnnnd, my first and last name both fall in the M-Z category. Can’t wait to see what my free upgrades will be, hehehe.

Cool Job Posting

February 01, 2008

Just a quick note, PW Software wasn’t down, the databases were being upgraded.

Anyhoo, I found a rather humorous job posting. Of course, I’m not qualified (as of yet) but I like the people there already. Here’s what it says:

Are you passionate about user-experience, web standards and accessibility? Have a proven portfolio of clean, compelling, goal-driven website design? Do you dream in XHTML and CSS and spend your afternoons writing unobtrusive JavaScript for fun?

Duo Consulting is looking for a rock-star Interaction Designer to join our Chicago Loop based team.

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience designing interfaces for the web, a portfolio of recent URLs, and a strong background in visual design, web standards, XHTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Tattoos are not required, though encouraged.

Is that awesome or what? I don’t have tattoos are live anywhere near Chicago, but if YOU do, then you should check them out.

Missing Old School Nintendo?

As we all know (and as you all have most likely seen) Nintendo DS Lites are everywhere. “But what about the original Gameboy?” you ask. “I liked the clunkiness and the fact that it could only fit in my cargo pants with the 15 pockets”. Well look no further! A new NDS Lite case comes complete with a built-in stand and it requires 3 AA batteries. Check out the pics!

NOD32 Online Scanner

I have been a regular user of ESET’s NOD32 antivirus system for quite some time now. But for some reason I only just found out that there’s an online scanner on the site! Seeing as how I love using NOD32, I decided to try it. What irked me was that I couldn’t use Opera with it (on account of it needed to install an ActiveX control) tongue laugh ... so I fired up my IE 6.0 (yes, I’m still on 6 because 7 is evil). Annnnnd ... here’s the results!

2232442076_ca94b29d52.jpg

The “threat” happened to be on my external HDD and was in a zip file. What’s more, one of the files had a variant of a trojan (which the online NOD32 promptly deleted). Meh, guess I forgot to scan it. Haha, I just noticed that the scan was completed just under 3 hours. There’s a note at the beginning of the scan saying that the scan time depends on how many files you have. And also if you have any external drives attached (but that’s not mentioned). I believe all Windows users should use this periodically ... and then invest in NOD32.

EDIT: I upgraded to ESET Smart Security. Such a pretty and clean interface surprised.

FLV Converter App

January 28, 2008

I just stumbled across this the other day. Vixy is a site that allows you to download videos from YouTube and has 5 formats to choose from: AVI, MOV, MP4 (for iPods), 3GP (for mobiles), and MP3. Recently it seems, they’ve added a downloadable app to the site so that you don’t have to keep going to the webiste to convert and download YouTube vids. It is in the beta stage however and will expire on March 31st. The video quality is decent I guess, but I would use this for iPods. Check it out!

Teen Hacks MMO

According to this, a 16 year old boy hacked into an MMO site, found a username and password of a former employee, and stole $325,000 worth of game points. And then he converted about $5,500 of that to buy books and software. Awesome. Not that I condone this, but you have to admit, it’s pretty cool.
